It’s the last week of December folks! Yes, it’s been a very challenging year for all of us, due to the pandemic. But this week, we must reward ourselves with a nice little vacation or at least a weekend getaway, to bring in the New Year!
But while planning a much-needed vacation, we must also take a few precautions to ensure that your home is safe while you’re away.
1. Install a home security alarm system
A good home security alarm system is an absolute must today. This is one investment that will give you complete peace of mind, and it’s really worth it. Make sure that you activate the alarm system before leaving on vacation.
2. Unplug all unnecessary appliances
TV’s, music systems, kitchen appliances, the list of appliances in a modern home is endless. Unplug all that is unnecessary before you leave. This will minimize the probability of a fire breaking out at home when you are not there. Also, make sure that your smoke alarm is active.
3. Request your neighbor to keep an eye on your home
Request your neighbor to keep an eye on your house. Ask them to immediately call the police, in case they see any suspicious movement. They should also have a spare key to your house as a backup.
4. Ask your neighbor to pick up your post
Yes, an overflowing mailbox is a clear invitation to a burglar. So please request your neighbor to pick up your post every day.
5. Put a couple of lights on a timer
You can even set timers on a few lights, so they’ll automatically turn on in the evening. This will give the impression that there is someone at home.
6. Remove your spare key
Most families have this cute little place to hide a spare key, just in case. Most seasoned crooks know exactly where to look and will always do a thorough search for the spare key. So make sure you remove the spare key from the usual safe place before you leave.
7. Do a systematic last-minute check
Just before you leave, please do a completely last-minute check. The gas is off, the appliances are unplugged, the mail slots and pet doors are secured and all the windows are secured.
These are just a few simple, but very important precautions that you must take to ensure that your home is well protected when you are on vacation.
Stay Safe, Feel Safe!
We wish you and your family a Happy New Year!
